Description

Mahr 1086 R Digital Indicator

The Mahr MarCator 1086 R-HR is the high-resolution variant of the established 1086 R digital indicator platform engineered specifically for measurement applications where 0.001mm or 0.0005mm resolution is no longer sufficient to adequately resolve part-to-part variation, evaluate tight geometric tolerances, or characterize measurement system repeatability. Available in two measuring spans from 12.5mm (0.5") and 25mm (1"), the 1086 R-HR adds a sixth, finer resolution step: 0.0001mm (0.1µm / 0.1 micron), equivalent to 0.00001" (ten-millionths of an inch) in inch mode. This single addition changes the instrument's classification from a production indicator to a laboratory and high-precision production instrument suited for the measurement tasks that expose the limitations of conventional digital indicators.

The practical consequence of 0.1µm resolution is access to measurement data that standard indicators display as a stable, unchanging reading. At 0.001mm resolution, a ±0.0003mm variation in a bore diameter or shaft form reads as zero and the last digit does not move. At 0.0001mm, that same variation becomes three counts of display change, distinguishing between a repeatable measurement and a part that is cycling. This distinction is operationally relevant in applications including setting master verification, reference gage calibration, high-tolerance shaft and bore runout measurement, flatness and parallelism evaluation on lapped surfaces, form measurement on precision components, and measurement system analysis (MSA/Gage R&R) where the indicator's own repeatability must be characterized and confirmed to be a minor contributor to total measurement variation relative to part tolerance.

The 1086 R-HR retains the full 1086 R feature set while adding measurement functions specifically suited to dynamic and geometric measurement tasks. MAX and MIN memory capture the maximum and minimum values recorded during a spindle travel sweep, enabling reversal-point detection during dynamic measurement. The MAX-MIN function computes and displays the total excursion between the stored MAX and MIN values which is the direct output needed for flatness, concentricity, runout, and parallelism checks where the total indicator reading (TIR) is the measurement result. Both functions retain their captured values until deliberately cleared, allowing the operator to complete a multi-point sweep before reading the result.

Resolution on the 1086 R-HR is user-selectable across all six steps being 0.0001mm, 0.0005mm, 0.001mm, 0.002mm, 0.005mm, and 0.01mm (0.00001" through 0.0005") from a single button press without recalibration. This means the same indicator can serve both the finest laboratory measurement at 0.1µm and standard production gaging at 0.01mm, eliminating the need to maintain separate indicators for different resolution requirements. All other standard 1086 R functions are present: Reference System zero retention through power cycles, PRESET numerical entry, tolerance GO/NO GO display mode with visual pass/fail indication, ABS zero-without-losing-PRESET-reference, configurable LOCK for individual key protection, and adjustable measurement factor for lever ratio compensation. MarConnect triple-protocol output (Digimatic, Opto RS-232C, and USB) is standard on every unit, and MarCom Professional software (free download from mahr.com) enables PC-based remote control and configuration via USB or RS-232.

Key Features

  • 0.0001mm/0.1µm/.00001" Finest Resolution - The 1086 R-HR's finest resolution step of 0.0001mm (100 nanometers / one ten-millionth of an inch) resolves measurement variation that is completely invisible to standard 0.001mm indicators, making it the correct choice for setting master verification, reference gage calibration, high-tolerance form and runout measurement, and measurement system analysis where the indicator's own resolution must be a minor fraction of the part tolerance under evaluation; all six resolution steps (0.0001mm through 0.01mm/.00001" through .0005") are selectable without recalibration, allowing the same indicator to cover both laboratory and production measurement requirements.
  • 0.0018mm Error Limit at 12.5mm Span - The 1086 R-HR's tighter mechanical and electrical specification at 12.5mm measuring span delivers an error limit of 0.0018mm (1.8µm), significantly below the 0.003mm error limit of the standard 1086 R at the same span and provides the low measurement uncertainty required for calibration-grade comparative measurement, incoming inspection of precision components, and gage verification tasks where the indicator's own contribution to the measurement budget must be documented and minimized.
  • MAX/MIN Memory with MAX-MIN TIR Display - MAX and MIN values are captured and held in memory throughout a measurement sweep, with the MAX-MIN function computing and displaying the total indicator reading (TIR) directly, the measurement result for flatness, concentricity, radial runout, parallelism, and straightness evaluations where total excursion is the specification; both values are retained until deliberately cleared, allowing multi-point sweeps and table rotations to complete before the TIR is read, and eliminating the need for manual peak-to-valley calculation or external data logging for geometric tolerance verification.
  • Reference System and Full Function Set - The Reference System stores the established zero and retains it through power-off cycles, spindle retraction, and indicator relocation, so every measurement session begins immediately from the stored reference without re-mastering; the complete function set, PRESET numerical entry, tolerance GO/NO GO display mode with visual pass/fail, ABS zero-without-losing-PRESET, configurable LOCK on individual keys, adjustable measurement factor, and mm/inch toggle which brings laboratory measurement accuracy to production floor workflows without sacrificing the operational efficiency features that high-throughput inspection requires.
  • MarConnect Triple-Protocol Output (Digimatic, Opto RS-232C, and USB Standard) - All three output protocols are hardware-present in every 1086 R-HR and selectable by cable without configuration changes, enabling direct connection to Mitutoyo Digimatic data collection systems, RS-232C SPC networks, and USB-connected PCs using the same indicator body; free MarCom Professional software (mahr.com) supports full PC-based remote control, key lock configuration, and data capture via USB or RS-232, and the 280° rotating lockable bezel ensures the display faces the operator regardless of indicator mounting orientation in any measuring stand, bench gage, or fixture gage configuration.
  • Two Measuring Spans - The 12.5mm (0.5") span with its 0.0018mm error limit and 0.0005mm repeatability is the preferred configuration for the highest-accuracy comparative applications - setting master verification, gage calibration, and short-travel precision fixture gages while the 25mm (1") span extends reach for applications requiring greater travel at 0.0001mm resolution; both models use the standard 8mm (8h6) mounting shank and M2.5 contact point thread, ensuring drop-in compatibility with all existing Mahr and industry-standard measuring stands, snap gages, and bench gage bodies already equipped for 1086 R indicators.
