A bore gauge is a precision instrument designed specifically to measure the internal diameter of bores, holes, and cylinders. While calipers and inside micrometers can measure internal dimensions, a properly configured bore gauge particularly a two-point or three-point contact type provides a faster, more repeatable result by self-centering in the bore without relying on operator technique to find the true diameter. For production environments where the same bore is measured repeatedly to tight tolerances, a bore gauge with carbide contacts paired with a dial indicator or digital readout delivers consistent, traceable results that handheld calipers cannot reliably match.

The Mitutoyo 511 Series is a traditional two-contact dial bore gauge that measures internal diameters by rocking the gauge to find the minimum reading, which corresponds to the true bore diameter. The Mitutoyo 468 Holtest uses a three-point interchangeable-head system that self-centers automatically in the bore producing a direct, self-centering measurement that requires less technique than two-point gauging and delivers faster, more consistent results in production environments. The 468's interchangeable head design also allows a single handle unit to cover multiple bore ranges simply by swapping heads, reducing the total investment needed for multi-diameter inspection programs.

Pin gauges also called plug gauges or pin gage sets are precision-ground cylindrical gauges used to verify the diameter of holes through direct insertion. They are the fastest, most reliable method for go/no-go hole size verification in production environments. Meyer Gage's Class X pin gauges are manufactured to tighter tolerances than Class Z, making them suitable for master calibration, reference standard use, and the most critical inspection applications where minimum measurement uncertainty is required. Class Z pin gauges are still high-precision instruments suitable for everyday production inspection, GO/NO-GO gauging, and standard quality control workflows where the extreme accuracy of Class X is not required. A chamfer gauge is a specialty instrument that measures the major (top) diameter of a chamfer, countersink, or tapered hole which is a dimension that cannot be measured directly with a standard caliper or micrometer. The Barcor Digital Electronic Chamfer Gauge uses a spring-loaded, precision-ground gaging plunger that seats directly in the chamfer or countersink, providing an instant digital reading without requiring a setting master or reference chart. A snap gauge is a fixed or adjustable C-frame instrument used to rapidly verify the outside diameter of cylindrical parts such as shafts, pins, and turned components without performing a full micrometer measurement on every piece. The gauge has two contact anvils set to the go and no-go limits of the specified tolerance; a part either passes through the go gap or it doesn't, giving an immediate accept/reject decision without reading a numeric value.
