Description

Mahr 1086 R Digital Indicator

The Mahr MarCator 1086 R is Mahr's workhorse digital indicator platform. A precision electronic dial indicator combining a wide measuring span range, selectable resolution, a Reference System for zero-point retention, and multi-protocol data output in a rugged, shop-floor-ready body. Available in four measuring spans (12.5mm, 25mm, 50mm, and 100mm), in both metric 8mm stem and imperial 3/8" stem configurations, the 1086 R is the standard digital indicator for length and distance comparative measurement across benchtop gaging stations, measuring stands, snap gages, height gages, fixture gages, and general production inspection setups.

The 1086 R's defining operational advantage over conventional dial indicators is its Reference System. Once the zero position is established against a master, a gage block, or a set point, it is stored internally and retained even when the indicator is switched off, the spindle is retracted, or the measuring setup is disturbed. When the indicator is powered back on or the spindle re-engaged, the stored zero reference is immediately active, eliminating the need to re-zero against a master at the start of each measurement session or after each part change. In production environments where the indicator is powered down between shifts, transferred between setups, or used as part of a multi-station gaging fixture, this single-set-zero capability reduces cycle time and eliminates a significant source of measurement setup error.

Resolution on the selectable-resolution 1086 R models is switchable between five levels (0.0005mm, 0.001mm, 0.002mm, 0.005mm, 0.01mm and 0.00002", 0.00005", 0.0001", 0.0002", 0.0005") allowing the same indicator to serve applications ranging from rough incoming inspection at 0.01mm to fine comparative measurement at 0.0005mm without requiring a separate instrument for each application. Fixed-resolution models at 0.01mm/0.0005" are also available for operations requiring a standardized readout that cannot be changed by the operator.

The 1086 R's high-contrast LCD displays 11mm-tall digits for clear readout at arm's length, and the operating and display unit (bezel) rotates through 280° and locks at any angle, allowing the display face to be angled toward the operator regardless of gage mounting orientation. The hardened stainless steel measuring spindle and 8mm or 3/8" mounting shank resist wear and corrosion in production environments, and the lifter protection cap on the spindle protects the contact end from accidental impact or chip intrusion. The IP42 protection rating addresses the most common workshop hazard categories such as particulate ingress and incidental drip exposure without requiring the full IP67 waterproofing of the 1086 WR variant.

Data output is handled through Mahr's MarConnect interface, providing simultaneous Digimatic, Opto RS-232C, and USB output modes. All three are hardware-present in every 1086 R, selectable by cable and no configuration required. MarCom Professional software (free download from mahr.com) enables remote control and configuration from a PC via USB or RS-232 connection. The Integrated Wireless variant (1086 Ri) eliminates all output cabling by embedding the radio transmitter directly in the indicator housing, removing the external transmitter module cost and clutter from the data collection chain entirely. Battery life across all 1086 R variants is approximately three years under normal production use, driven by the Reference System's extremely low standby power consumption.

Key Features

  • Reference System, Store Zero Once, Measure Immediately Every Time - The 1086 R's Reference System stores the established zero position internally, retaining it through power-off cycles, spindle retractions, and setup disturbances; when the indicator is switched on or the spindle re-engaged, the stored reference is immediately active without re-mastering which eliminates the zero-reset step at the start of each shift or each part change and removing a primary source of setup error in high-turnover production gaging environments
  • Selectable Resolution, Five Steps from 0.0005mm to 0.01mm on One Indicator - Resolution switches between 0.0005mm, 0.001mm, 0.002mm, 0.005mm, and 0.01mm (0.00002" through 0.0005") at the touch of a button, allowing the same indicator to serve both coarse incoming inspection and fine comparative measurement applications without maintaining separate instruments at each resolution; fixed-resolution 0.01mm / 0.0005" models are also available for standardized production setups where operator-selectable resolution is not desired.
  • Four Measuring Spans from 12.5mm to 100mm in Metric and Imperial Shank - Measuring spans of 12.5mm (0.5"), 25mm (1"), 50mm (2"), and 100mm (4") cover the full range of production comparative measurement requirements from precision bore and shaft inspection at the short end to long-travel height gage and measuring stand applications at the long end; both 8mm metric stem (M2.5 thread) and 3/8" imperial stem (4-48 thread) configurations are available, ensuring drop-in compatibility with all standard gage bodies, measuring stand columns, and fixture gage mounts.
  • 280° Rotating and Lockable Bezel with 11mm High-Contrast LCD Digits - The operating and display unit rotates through 280° and locks at any angle without tools, allowing the display to be oriented toward the operator in any gage mounting configuration such as vertical column, horizontal arm, tilted fixture, or flush-mount bezel setup; the 11mm high-contrast LCD digits remain clearly readable at working distance under shop floor lighting conditions without backlighting, and the IP42-rated housing resists dust and drip ingress in controlled production environments.
  • MarConnect Triple-Protocol Output for Digimatic, Opto RS-232C, and USB Standard on Every Unit - All three output protocols are hardware-present in every 1086 R and selectable by cable without configuration changes, enabling connection to Mitutoyo Digimatic-based data collection systems, RS-232C SPC networks, and USB-connected PCs using the same indicator; the free MarCom Professional software download (mahr.com) supports remote PC control, configuration, key locking, and data capture for USB and RS-232 connections, and the 1086 Ri variant adds Integrated Wireless transmission to eliminate output cables entirely.
  • Hardened Stainless Steel Spindle and Shank with Lifter Protection Cap - Both the measuring spindle and the 8mm (or 3/8") mounting shank are hardened stainless steel throughout for corrosion resistance and long wear life under production cycling loads; the lifter protection cap shields the contact end of the spindle from chip impact and debris intrusion during part loading; and the approximately 3-year battery life enabled by the Reference System's low standby power draw, eliminates the frequent battery changes that conventional digital indicators require in always-on production gaging applications.
