Phase2+ 900-420/900-440 Superficial Digital Rockwell Hardness Tester
The Phase2+ 900-420 and 900-440 are large-frame, motorized digital hardness testers built for high-throughput laboratory and production QC environments that demand precise, repeatable superficial Rockwell testing on a heavy-duty platform. Both models use a closed-loop load cell system in place of traditional dead weights, eliminating the mechanical variability, drift, and maintenance overhead of conventional weight-and-lever designs. The result is a high-speed test cycle with extremely accurate force application that delivers consistent results shift after shift, operator after operator.
The 900-420 is a dedicated Superficial Rockwell tester covering all HRN and HRT scales across 15, 30, and 45 kgf major load levels. It is the purpose-built choice for labs and production lines that exclusively test thin sheet metal, case-hardened or nitrided surfaces, coated parts, and soft non-ferrous materials applications where standard Rockwell loads would either over-penetrate or damage the specimen. The 900-440 is the Twin model: it retains the full superficial Rockwell capability of the 900-420 while adding complete standard Rockwell coverage (HRA, HRB, HRC, and the full range of ball-scale loads at 60, 100, and 150 kgf), making it a single instrument that eliminates the need for two separate benchtop testers in mixed-material inspection environments.
Both instruments are governed by a micro-computer controlled touchscreen interface that manages the entire automated load/unload cycle through a one-touch testing sequence. The system supports programmable dwell times, upper and lower limit settings, test counters, and statistical output. Results display on a high-definition LCD with automatic conversion to HB, HV, and all applicable Rockwell and Superficial Rockwell scales. USB output transfers data directly to a flash drive for records, SPC integration, and reporting without requiring a PC connection at the instrument. Both models comply with ASTM E18, and are available with ASTM E18-20 certification for customers in regulated industries requiring documented instrument traceability.
With an 8.0" vertical capacity, 7.8" throat depth, and a shared 175-lb frame, both testers accommodate a wide range of part geometries and fixturing configurations, and are compatible with optional long-shank ball indenters and an extra-large 9.84" diameter flat anvil for oversized workpieces.
Key Features
-
Two Models for Different Scope - Superficial-Only or Full Twin Coverage - The 900-420 covers all Superficial Rockwell scales (HRN, HRT, W, X, Y) at 15/30/45 kgf, ideal for dedicated thin-material inspection lines. The 900-440 Twin adds complete standard Rockwell coverage (HRA, HRB, HRC, HRD, HRE, HRF, and all ball scales at 60/100/150 kgf), eliminating the need for two separate instruments in mixed-material QC labs.
-
Closed-Loop Load Cell Replaces Dead Weights for High-Accuracy Force Control - Direct motorized loading via a precision closed-loop load cell delivers tightly controlled force application across all test loads, eliminating the calibration drift, mechanical wear, and inconsistency of traditional dead-weight and lever systems for long-term measurement reliability.
-
Micro-Computer Touchscreen with Fully Automated Load/Unload Cycle - The one-touch test sequence handles complete motorized load application and removal without operator intervention, removing the primary source of human variability in Rockwell testing; programmable dwell times, scale selection, and upper/lower limit settings adapt the tester to specific material and inspection requirements.
-
Automatic Conversion to HB, HV, and All Rockwell/Superficial Scales - Results display instantly on a high-definition LCD with automatic cross-conversion to Brinell (HB), Vickers (HV), and all applicable Rockwell and Superficial Rockwell hardness scales, eliminating manual lookup tables and reducing transcription errors in high-volume inspection workflows.
-
USB Output to Flash Drive with Statistical Capabilities - Built-in USB port transfers test data directly to a flash drive for SPC analysis, records management, and audit trail documentation without requiring a tethered PC at the instrument; test counter and configurable pass/fail limits support structured inspection protocols and production floor QC requirements.
-
Large 8.0" Vertical Capacity and 7.8" Throat Depth on a Shared 175-lb Frame - The generous working envelope accommodates tall parts, thick workpieces, and a wide variety of anvil and fixturing configurations; optional long-shank ball indenters and an oversized 9.84" flat anvil extend compatibility to large-format specimens not addressable on standard-frame testers.
