The collection covers nine distinct Mitutoyo instrument families: Digimatic calipers (500 Series standard, 573 Series specialty including low-force and neck-point variants), digimatic depth gages (571 Series, 18" and 24" ranges with SPC), digimatic scale units and multi-function units (572 Series, horizontal type), the 568 Series Borematic absolute digimatic snap-open bore gages (individuals and 3-head sets), the 543 Series Digimatic Indicator ID-H, outside micrometers (103 Series mechanical sets and individuals), the 406 Series Digimatic non-rotating spindle micrometer, the 340 Series Digimatic interchangeable-anvil outside micrometer, the 126 Series screw thread micrometer, the 523 Series dial snap meter, and the 516 Series gauge block sets covered in the dedicated Gauge Blocks collection. Founded in Tokyo in 1934, Mitutoyo is the world's largest manufacturer of precision measuring instruments with over 5,500 products and operations in more than 100 countries.

The 500 Series Digimatic is Mitutoyo's flagship digital caliper and the most widely used precision caliper in manufacturing worldwide. Its defining features are the ABSOLUTE encoder system, which retains the origin point through power-off cycles so the instrument is ready to measure the moment it powers on without re-zeroing; a hardened stainless steel beam for long-term dimensional stability; a high-contrast LCD with instant inch/metric conversion; and direct SPC data output for integration with statistical quality systems. Multiple configurations cover ranges from 6" (150mm) up to 40" with options including carbide-tipped jaws for measuring abrasive materials. The 573 Series extends the platform with specialty variants like the the 573-752-20 adds a neck-point jaw and thumbroll for reaching into recesses, and the 573-291-30 is a low-force caliper delivering a controlled, reduced measuring force of 1N for soft or deformable materials that would be distorted by standard caliper pressure.

The ABSOLUTE encoder is a linear position-sensing system that knows its exact location at all times and it does not require a reference sweep or zeroing operation after power-on because it tracks absolute position continuously rather than incrementally from a zero point. On an incremental encoder system, powering down or moving the slider too fast (an over-speed error) loses position, requiring the operator to re-zero against a reference before each measurement session. On ABSOLUTE-equipped instruments like the 500 Series calipers, 568 Borematic bore gages, 571 depth gages, and 543 Digimatic Indicator, the instrument is ready to measure the moment it wakes from power-off, with no re-zeroing, no over-speed risk, and no possibility of accumulated positional error. In production environments where instruments are powered down between parts or shifts, ABSOLUTE encoding eliminates a repeatable source of measurement error and cycle time waste.

The 568 Borematic is Mitutoyo's ABSOLUTE digimatic snap-open bore gauge which is a three-point self-centering internal diameter measurement system with a lever-actuated snap mechanism that retracts and releases the TiN-coated anvils with a single press, rather than requiring the operator to manually thread or rock a thimble. The snap mechanism dramatically reduces measurement cycle time and improves between-operator consistency by standardizing the anvil approach and contact force. The 330°-rotatable LCD display can be oriented to read clearly at any insertion angle without removing the instrument from the bore. The ABSOLUTE encoder eliminates origin resetting across the battery life. The built-in GO/NO-GO tolerance judgment function provides immediate pass/fail feedback, and direct SPC output connects the gage to quality management systems. The 3-Head Set bundles the display unit with three interchangeable measuring heads covering a defined diameter range while one unit replaces three separate bore gages.

Three outside micrometer platforms are represented. The 103 Series is Mitutoyo's standard mechanical outside micrometer and the precision workhorse of machining shops worldwide, available as individual instruments and as a complete inch set, with carbide measuring faces, ratchet stop, and friction thimble. The 406 Series Digimatic Non-Rotating Spindle Micrometer adds digital readout and a non-rotating spindle design that prevents torque from the thimble from reaching the measuring face eliminating the rotational contact force that causes reading inconsistency on cylindrical or soft parts in standard micrometers. The 340 Series Digimatic Interchangeable-Anvil Outside Micrometer uses a set of interchangeable anvil configurations on a single frame, allowing one instrument to measure multiple part geometries like flat, ball, disk, and spline anvils without the cost of purchasing separate specialty micrometers for each form. The 126 Series Screw Thread Micrometer rounds out the lineup with V-anvil and cone-point contacts designed specifically for measuring the pitch diameter of external threads which is a measurement no standard flat-face micrometer can make.

The 571 Series Digimatic Depth Gages are available in 18" (571-214-10) and 24" (571-215-10) ranges with SPC output and are precision instruments specifically designed to measure the depth of holes, recesses, counterbores, slots, and steps from a reference surface. A caliper's depth blade can measure basic depths, but it lacks the flat reference base, the extended range, and the accurate reference-surface contact geometry of a dedicated depth gage. The 571 Series uses Mitutoyo's ABSOLUTE encoder for instant power-on readiness, displays in inch/metric, and outputs directly to SPC systems via the Digimatic interface. The 18" and 24" models make them equally appropriate for standard machined components and large structural parts where deep hole or long-reach depth measurement is required.

The 572 Series Digimatic Scale Unit (horizontal type) is a linear encoder output device, essentially a high-precision, motorizable digital scale with Digimatic SPC output rather than a hand-held measuring instrument. It is designed to be integrated into measuring fixtures, jigs, height gages, comparator stands, and automated inspection stations where a linear position readout is needed as a component of a larger measurement system. Unlike a caliper or depth gage, which the operator brings to the part, a scale unit is mounted to a fixed structure; the part (or a probe attached to the scale's slider) moves relative to the scale. This makes the 572 Series the right component for custom inspection fixturing, automated gauging cells, and measurement stations where the measurement range, mounting orientation, and interface requirements are defined by the application rather than by a standard hand tool form factor.

The 523 Series Dial Snap Meter is Mitutoyo's indicating snap gage with a fixed-frame C-section instrument with a dial indicator that measures the outside diameter of shafts, pins, and cylindrical features through direct contact rather than requiring the operator to close a micrometer against the part. The operator slides the part into the open jaw, the contacts engage the diameter, and the dial reads deviation from the preset nominal immediately without turning a thimble or reading a scale. This makes it the fastest external diameter inspection method for high-volume production environments where the same diameter is checked hundreds of times per shift. The carbide anvils and controlled measuring force deliver consistent results across operators and shifts, and the dial output can be paired with a Mitutoyo indicator stand or data processor for SPC collection.

Digimatic is Mitutoyo's proprietary digital measurement output protocol with a standardized one-way serial data interface that transmits measurement values from the instrument to a connected device (PC, data processor, multiplexer, or printer) via a standard cable or wireless transmitter. Every Mitutoyo instrument labeled "SPC" in this collection including the 500 Series calipers, 573 Series specialty calipers, 571 Series depth gages, 568 Borematic bore gages, and 543 Digimatic Indicator outputs data in Digimatic format. In practice this means pressing the DATA button on the instrument sends the current reading directly into a spreadsheet, SPC software (MeasurLink, QC-Calc, InfinityQS), or data collector without manual transcription. Mitutoyo's U-WAVE wireless system and Surftest SJ-series roughness testers also use Digimatic, meaning a lab can build a comprehensive multi-instrument paperless inspection station using a common output standard across all Mitutoyo instruments.

All Mitutoyo orders ship free to the continental USA on orders and arebacked by a best-price guarantee. A 30-day return policy and Affirm financing at checkout are available. Government agencies, calibration labs, aerospace suppliers, and defense contractors can submit an RFQ through the dedicated Government RFQ page (DUNS: 13-715-2209, CAGE: 15F67). Mitutoyo's instrument ecosystem is built around Digimatic compatibility by selecting the right series, range, encoder type, and output configuration for a specific inspection workflow involves decisions that interact across instruments and software.
